Budō (Japanese 武道, literally “military way, way of war,” meaning “martial art, combat art”) is the umbrella term for all Japanese martial arts, i.e., jiu jitsu, judo, karate, suijutsu, aikidō, shōrinji kempō, sumō, kendō, bujinkan, iaidō, kyūdō, etc., which—in contrast to the traditional bujutsu martial arts—include not only combat techniques but also an “inner” dō teaching or philosophy.
The Sino-Japanese kanji Bu (武) corresponds to the ancient Japanese Takeshi and means something like “military” or “warlike.” The kanji Dō (道) generally has the meaning of the word “way.”
