The Hidetaka Nishiyama Karate Institute (HNKI) – The Technical Foundation of the International Traditional Karate Federation (ITKF)

As General Secretary of the International Traditional Karate Federation (ITKF), I consider it important to emphasize the unique role of the Hidetaka Nishiyama Karate Institute (HNKI).

The HNKI was established by our founder and teacher, Sensei Hidetaka Nishiyama (1928–2008). It serves as the technical foundation of the ITKF, with the responsibility of preserving and passing on the principles, knowledge and technical standards of Traditional Karate worldwide.

Traditional Karate Is More Than Competition

For the ITKF, Traditional Karate means much more than competitive sport. We strive to preserve a martial art in which technical excellence, effective body mechanics, health, discipline and character development are inseparably connected. Karate should not be reduced to points, medals and competition results. At its heart is the long-term development of the individual through a profound and technically demanding martial art.

Understand the Technique – Don’t Just Perform It

The HNKI helps ensure that the fundamental principles of Traditional Karate are not lost or diluted by an increasing focus on competition. The technical principles, biomechanical concepts and teachings of Sensei Nishiyama are preserved, documented and passed on to the next generation of instructors. Our instructors should not simply perform Karate. They should understand why a technique works and how it can be taught effectively and in a way that respects the health of the practitioner.

A Common Technical Foundation for the ITKF

The HNKI provides a common technical foundation for the ITKF and its member organizations worldwide. It supports consistent standards in education and helps ensure that the essential principles of Traditional Karate remain internationally recognizable and preserved.

Passing on the Legacy

As the ITKF, our goal is to preserve the knowledge and values of the founders of Traditional Karate and pass them on to future generations. The HNKI plays a central role in this mission. Traditional Karate must remain authentic, profound and alive – today and for generations to come.

This year, 23 karateka from clubs across the German federal states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg, Berlin, and Saxony-Anhalt came together for the DTSKF Summer Master Camp. Despite the relatively small number of instructors and assistant instructors, the atmosphere was excellent, and everyone enjoyed an intensive and motivating training experience. Next year, the camp will once again be extended to four days, giving us more time to explore additional focus areas in Traditional Karate.

Oji-waza, Timing and Todome-waza

The main focus of this year’s Traditional Karate training was Oji-waza (counter techniques) and its three specific timing variations: Go-no-sen, Tai-no-sen, and Kake-no-sen. The ultimate objective was always the execution of a powerful Todome-waza—a decisive finishing technique.

These principles were developed through a variety of partner drills, allowing participants to experience and apply the different timing concepts in practice. To support their continued training after the camp, all participants also received supplementary training materials prepared specifically for the seminar.

Amashi-waza and the Principle of Kyo

Another important focus was Amashi-waza, the principle of evasion and creating distance through movement. We began with three practical variations before progressing to the concept of physical Kyo—the moment of vulnerability or imbalance that can be exploited within a technique.

The combination of timing, movement, distance, and Kyo provided an important connection between technical execution and the underlying principles of Traditional Karate.

Kata Ji’in and Early-Morning Training

The final major focus was the Kata Ji’in. Participants worked intensively on the kata throughout the camp, including a special training session at 6:30 a.m. The early start provided a memorable opportunity to experience Ji’in under very different physical and mental conditions.

A targeted primary school training program brought together and applied many of the concepts covered during the camp, translating the principles of timing, movement, and technique into practical exercises.

Meeting Friends and Former Students, European Champions (ITKF)

It was wonderful to have all the coaches and assistant coaches together with me again. I was especially pleased to welcome my former student Robert Belitz, who travelled from Magdeburg specifically for the camp. Robert was my first ITKF European Champion back in 2004, making his return particularly meaningful.

The breaks provided plenty of opportunities for great conversations, technical discussions, and catching up. We have already made plans to meet again in 2027.

DTSKF Summer Master Camp 2027

The next DTSKF Summer Master Camp will take place from July 1–4, 2027. With an additional training day, we look forward to an even more intensive program covering further aspects of Traditional Karate, Oji-waza, Todome-waza, Amashi-waza, and Kata.

We are already looking forward to welcoming everyone back in 2027!

Summer Training Camp of the Association of Traditional Karateka Berlin (VTKB)

From August 16 to August 21, 2026, the Association of Traditional Karateka Berlin (VTKB) held its annual summer training camp at the Dorado Holiday Camp in Marienwerder. A total of 32 karateka from Berlin, Brandenburg, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania took part in the week-long Traditional Karate training camp.

Traditional Karate training for children, youths, and adults

Karate practitioners from several VTKB clubs came together for the summer camp. Participants travelled from Zinnowitz in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Werneuchen in Brandenburg, and Berlin.

As in previous years, the focus was on Traditional Karate training, combining technical practice, physical activity, and the principles of traditional karate. Children, youths, and adults trained together throughout the week and had the opportunity to improve their karate techniques in a friendly and motivating atmosphere.

A major part of the training focused on kihon, the practice of basic karate techniques. Particular attention was given to the Heian kata, helping participants develop precision, coordination, timing, and a deeper understanding of traditional karate movements.

The training programme also included different morote and uke techniques, as well as introductory bunkai exercises. Partner drills and controlled kumite practice provided an opportunity to apply techniques in a practical training situation.

Preparing for the karate grading

The intensive training week culminated in a karate belt grading examination. Participants were able to demonstrate the skills and techniques they had developed during the camp.

The children in particular showed a high level of motivation and commitment. Their enthusiasm was reflected in the quality of their training and provided a strong foundation for the upcoming karate groups in the new school year.

Training, sport, and plenty of fun

Although Traditional Karate was at the heart of the VTKB summer camp, training was only one part of the experience. The participants also enjoyed sports, games, and plenty of time together away from the dojo.

For children and young karateka in particular, the combination of intensive karate training, outdoor activities, and shared experiences made the summer camp a memorable event.

The week passed quickly, and all participants clearly enjoyed the combination of karate training, sport, and community. The VTKB is already looking forward to bringing its clubs and karateka together again for the 2027 summer training camp.

Traditional Karate in Berlin and beyond

The VTKB summer camp is an important part of the association’s activities and brings together karateka from Berlin and the surrounding region. Through regular training, seminars, grading examinations, and events such as the summer camp, the participating clubs promote the practice and teaching of Traditional Karate for children, young people, and adults.

Traditional Karate ITKF Summer Master Camp 2026 – The Revival of a Historic Tradition

A New Beginning for the ITKF Summer Master Camp

For many months, Sensei Richard (Rick) Jorgensen (9th Dan) devoted himself to preparing and promoting the ITKF Summer Master Camp 2026. More than just another training event, the camp represented the long-awaited revival of the International Traditional Karate Federation (ITKF) Summer Master Camps. These camps have played a central role in the development of Traditional Karate for decades and have inspired generations of karateka worldwide. After several years without an international summer camp, the 2026 edition became a milestone not only for the participants but also for the entire Traditional Karate community.

A Tradition Dating Back to 1967

The history of the ITKF Summer Master Camp began in 1967 in San Diego, California, under the leadership of Sensei Hidetaka Nishiyama, whose vision established one of the most respected international training traditions in Traditional Karate. From 1967 to 2026, the ITKF has celebrated 61 years of Summer Camp history, with the 2026 event marking the 51st camp to be held. Although the venues changed following the passing of Sensei Nishiyama, the philosophy, technical standards, and educational principles of his teaching have remained unchanged. After a hiatus from 2017 to 2025, the Summer Master Camp finally returned in 2026. Since 2008, the technical leadership has been entrusted to Sensei Richard Jorgensen (9th Dan), who continues to preserve and develop Sensei Nishiyama’s legacy.

Brock University Hosts the 2026 Summer Master Camp

The ITKF Summer Master Camp 2026 took place from July 8 to July 12, 2026, at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, just a short distance from the world-famous Niagara Falls. Although several instructors and karateka from Pakistan and Uzbekistan were unfortunately unable to attend because of visa restrictions, the camp welcomed 28 highly motivated participants from Germany, Canada, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Japan, and KMFAP. Germany provided the largest delegation, with twelve participants. Despite the smaller number of attendees, the atmosphere proved ideal for intensive instruction and close interaction between students and instructors.

Intensive Traditional Karate Training

Training began each morning at 9:00 a.m. and continued until noon, with a short break in between. The morning sessions focused on self-defense principles, breathing methods, body dynamics, and the generation and control of power. Afternoon training lasted from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and concentrated on blocking techniques, punching, striking, stance and stepping, body shifting, and transitions within kata. The curriculum reflected the comprehensive technical system that has become the hallmark of Traditional Karate within the ITKF.

Technical Program and Advanced Instruction

On July 9, the emphasis was placed on the creation, delivery, and control of power, the technical application of ITKF Shiai rules, and advanced body dynamics. During the afternoon, participants worked extensively on kicking techniques, blocking, timing, kata, and self-defense applications (Bunkai). By the third day, the demanding training schedule had begun to take its toll, and many karateka experienced the familiar leg fatigue associated with intensive Summer Master Camps. Sensei Nishiyama often reminded his students that the middle of the camp is traditionally the most difficult stage and that perseverance is rewarded during the remaining days.

The morning instruction on the third day covered fundamental techniques combined with timing exercises, transitional kumite, Sanbon Kumite, Jiyu Ippon Kumite, Enbu regulations, and Bunkai. During the afternoon, participants trained Ko-Go and Jiyu Ippon Kumite before continuing with Bassai Dai, instructed by Sensei Slobodan Milicevic (8th Dan), followed by Jion, which was taught by Sensei Michael Bock (8th Dan, ITKF). For Michael Bock, it was both an honor and a privilege to contribute as an instructor to the revival of the historic ITKF Summer Master Camp.

Medical Education and the Future of the ITKF

The evening program included a presentation by Dr. Bojan Jelic, who spoke about working with children and young people from a medical perspective and emphasized healthy long-term athletic development. Later that evening, the ITKF Board of Directors convened to discuss the future direction of the organization. The meeting focused on revitalizing the ITKF, reviewing previous organizational challenges, strengthening international educational programs, expanding cooperation with universities, and planning future international championships. Among the major events discussed were the 13th ITKF World Shiai, scheduled for November 9–15, 2027, in Prague, Czech Republic, and the planned 39th ITKF European Shiai, which is expected to take place in Berlin, Germany, in November 2028.

Referee Training and Dan Examinations

Training on July 11 focused primarily on referee education. The morning sessions covered Kata judging, Kitei, synchronized Kata, Bunkai, breathing methods, and Embusen. During the afternoon, participants continued their study of Tai Sabaki, Embusen, Kitei, and advanced Bunkai under the guidance of the senior instructors. On the final day of the camp, referee education continued with practical instruction on the responsibilities of Fukushin and Shushin during Ko-Go and Jiyu Kumite. The program concluded with model matches that allowed referees to apply the knowledge acquired throughout the week in realistic competition scenarios.

Following the completion of the technical program, Dan examinations and instructor license examinations were conducted. Two candidates successfully achieved Sho-Dan (1st Dan), one candidate was promoted to San-Dan (3rd Dan), and three candidates earned the rank of Yon-Dan (4th Dan).

A Successful Revival of the ITKF Summer Camp Tradition

The participants expressed their sincere appreciation for the dedication and leadership of Sensei Richard Jorgensen, whose commitment ensured not only an outstanding technical program but also excellent organization, accommodation, and hospitality. The successful return of the ITKF Summer Master Camp demonstrated that this unique tradition of international Traditional Karate training has entered a new chapter while remaining firmly rooted in the philosophy and teachings established by Sensei Hidetaka Nishiyama more than six decades ago.

As the camp came to a close, there was unanimous agreement among all participants that the revival had been a complete success and that they looked forward to returning the following year.

European Championship 2028 Also Confirmed

Another major milestone for the traditional karate community has already been announced. The ITKF and ETKU European Traditional Karate Championship 2028 will be held in Berlin, Germany, from 14–19 November 2028.

The German capital will welcome athletes, coaches, officials, and karate enthusiasts from across Europe for one of the continent’s most prestigious traditional karate events. Hosting the European Championship further highlights Germany’s important role in the development and promotion of traditional karate in Europe.

From May 1st to May 3rd, 2026, the Serbian city of Novi Sad became the center of the international karate community. The main focus of the event was the 38th ETKU (ETKF) European Championship of the ITKF, bringing together numerous nations, senior officials, referees, instructors, and athletes to promote international exchange and the continued development of Traditional Karate within the ITKF.

International ITKF Referee Education

Several days before the championship officially began, international referees from Italy, Germany, Slovenia, Poland, and Serbia arrived in Novi Sad to participate in an intensive ITKF referee education program. The training was personally conducted by ITKF President and Chairman Sensei Richard Jorgensen, who dedicated significant energy and experience to maintaining and improving the high international standards of Traditional Karate officiating.

The referee seminars were held partly in the dojo of ETKU (ETKF) President Sensei Slobodan Milicevic and partly inside the sports arena itself. Through this educational program, the ITKF once again demonstrated its strong commitment to technical quality, education, and international cooperation.

Sensei Michael Bock was also present in Novi Sad in his role as Secretary General of the ITKF. In addition to supporting the organizational and representative duties of the championship, he also represented the Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Knights of Malta, Federation of the Autonomous Priories.

Lectures and International Exchange

Another important highlight was the lecture given by Prof. Goran Lozo, CEO of BIZ Consulting USA. During the ITKF event, he spoke about modern training organization and strategies for attracting and developing new students and members.

Throughout the championship, delegations and competitors from Hungary, Czech Republic, Italy, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia, Germany, Poland, and Spain arrived in Novi Sad. Additional guests from the United States and Canada also attended the event. This strong international participation once again demonstrated the growing influence and unity of the ITKF within the worldwide Traditional Karate community.

38th ETKU (ETKF) European Championship of the ITKF

European Championship and Children’s Traditional Karate Competition

The championship competition itself was marked by high technical standards, discipline, and strong fighting spirit. The athletes demonstrated the values of Traditional Karate that the ITKF has promoted and preserved for decades.

Despite some organizational challenges during parts of the event, the championship was successfully conducted and widely recognized as an important international platform for Traditional Karate. The parallel children’s championship complemented the event and reflected the strong youth development within ITKF structures.

ITKF Strengthens Discussions with the IOC

One of the most significant aspects of the championship involved discussions concerning the international future of Traditional Karate and the strategic direction of the ITKF. Chairman Sensei Rick Jorgensen, Secretary General Michael Bock, and Sir Prof. Georg Popper held intensive meetings regarding the long-term development of the organization.

The discussions focused on ITKF educational programs, scientific studies related to human and physical development, and especially the ongoing dialogue with the IOC. The participants discussed future strategies for strengthening the international position of Traditional Karate and explored further possibilities regarding the topic of Olympic recognition.

These meetings clearly demonstrated that the ITKF continues to work actively toward expanding the global presence of Traditional Karate and creating long-term opportunities within the Olympic movement.

The 38th ETKU (ETKF) European Championship in Novi Sad strongly reflected the international strength, unity, and future-oriented vision of the ITKF. Beyond the high-level competition, the event emphasized education, international cooperation, and the strategic future of Traditional Karate.

ITKF International Traditional Karate Summer Camp 2026 – Niagara Falls, Canada

The ITKF International Traditional Karate Summer Camp will be held 2026 in the Niagara Falls region of Ontario, Canada. The program follows the technical guidelines established by Sensei Hidetaka Nishiyama, focusing on Traditional Karate as self-defence, Budo training, and holistic personal development.

In addition to technical training, the camp includes Traditional Karate competition (Shi-ai) and opportunities for international coach, referee, and Dan certification for eligible participants. The camp is directed by Sensei Richard Jorgensen with the support of the ITKF Technical Committee. Space is limited and early registration is recommended.

Sensei Enver Cakiqi, Sensei Takeshi Kitagawa, Sensei Michael Bock

Berlin once again became the meeting place for the international karate scene on the weekend of March 21st and 22nd, 2026. Welcomed the international grandmasters of Shotokan karate

On Friday evening, 30 participants from Berlin and Brandenburg, including brown and black belts, welcomed the aforementioned international grandmasters of Shotokan karate. After a brief round of introductions and a dynamic warm-up, the focus for this advanced level was on the principles of the moment: precision, posture, timing, technique, and above all, the spirit – and how these can be vividly implemented in practice.

Throughout the weekend, intensive training sessions followed with Sensei Takeshi Kitagawa, 9th Dan from the USA/Japan, and Sensei Enver Cakiqi, 9th Dan from Albania. Over 260 karateka from various clubs and German states trained side by side and learned directly from the grandmasters.

On Saturday and Sunday, intermediate and beginner karate students, along with numerous other practitioners, joined the group to meet the grandmasters in person. The program included Kihon, the precise execution of basic techniques from stances and punches to kicks; Kata, prescribed sequences of movements for training timing and concentration; Kumite, partner exercises and sparring for the practical application of techniques; technical combinations to improve agility, speed, and coordination; and the core principles of Shotokan karate, including posture, distance control, reaction time, and the sense for the right moment to strike – all taught practically by the international masters. The principle of “one moment” in Japanese, “Ichigo-Ichi e” was also discussed in detail and then practiced.

A particular highlight was the belt examination, in which 193 candidates – including numerous children, teenagers, and adults from DTSKF clubs – took on the challenge. Under the expert eyes of six DTSKF master examiners, they demonstrated their skills and received new ranks. Of particular note was the examination of Tabea Schulz, who successfully passed her 1st Dan exam.

Berlin became an international meeting place for Shotokan Karate

This weekend, Berlin became an international meeting place for Shotokan Karate. In Müggelheim, on Monday evening, Sensei Takeshi Kitagawa, 9th Dan, came to the Berlin-Müggelheim sports hall for a farewell training session, inspiring the students one last time. Technique, tradition, community, and pride in personal achievements merged into an experience that will remain in the memories of all the karate practitioners for a long time. Osu!

The karate course is optimally organized by rank:

– 12:00 – 1:15 PM → 9th Kyu – 6th Kyu
– 1:30 – 2:45 PM → 5th Kyu – Dan
– 3:15 – 4:30 PM → all ranks

This way, you’ll get exactly the training that suits your level.
